Student writes unwanted catcalls on pavements in New York

Student Sophie Sandberg has been going round New York writing out unwanted catcalls on pavements.

The 21-year-old says she’s in the quest for to boost consciousness about sexual harassment in the town.

Women ship her the unwanted feedback discussed to them after which Sophie is going to where the place it came about and writes it out in huge letters in chalk.

Sophie a professional Newsbeat she hopes her artwork will make other people imagine in moderation about catcalling.

“When I began doing the undertaking I realised other people get in truth competitive and vulgar feedback.

“When it first came about to me, it appeared like a praise, like ‘Hey gorgeous’ and ‘Hey horny’.

“I felt so uncomfortable. It sounded like a compliment but I felt like I was being watched and my body wasn’t mine. I was only 15.”

Sophie, who began the undertaking in 2016, takes pictures of the catcalls written on the pavement and posts them on Instagram.

She has in the previous posted 102 pictures and has greater than five,000 fans.

“I thought chalk would be the easiest. It’s colourful and bright and it’s washable, so it is not vandalism,” she says.

Sophie says the brand new “Me Too” motion is a smart instance of other people beginning to speak about out in opposition to unwanted sexual advances.
